On May 6 , 2017 , at the Monza National Circuit in Italy, during Nike 's Breaking2 challenge, he set an unprecedented record of 2:00:25, breaking the personal best in marathon history. However, due to factors such as dedicated pacing teams, aid supplies, and lead instructions, the Breaking2 time cannot be considered an official record.
He broke the world record and won the 2018 Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:01:39 .
On October 12, 2019 , he broke the unofficial world record with a time of 1 hour , 59 minutes, and 40.2 seconds in the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, bringing the human marathon time under two hours. However, because this was an unofficial race with no other competitors, and the pacing team's accompanying runners did not comply with athletics rules, this result will not be included in the IAAF record.
On September 25 , 2022 , he improved his own record by 30 seconds at the Berlin Marathon with a time of 2 hours , 1 minute and 9 seconds.
He finished the Berlin Marathon in 2 hours , 2 minutes and 42 seconds on September 24 , 2023 , and won the Berlin Marathon five times. He became the only athlete in history to win the Berlin Marathon five times.
